How do I know if I can use my own phone with Fizz?
You can, of course, buy a phone on fizz.ca, but you can also use your own phone with Fizz. To do so, your phone must be:
- Compatible with the Fizz network
- Able to support the frequencies of our network
- Certified VoLTE with Fizz (not required before the 3G network withdrawal, but nonetheless recommended)
If your phone does not quite meet these criteria, it may still be functional but your access to certain services may be limited. If this is the case, we will contact you to inform you.
-
Is it compatible?
Android > The majority of Android phones sold in North America in the last five (5) years are compatible with Fizz. But once the 3G network disappears, only phones that are certified VoLTE with Fizz will work.
iPhone > You must check three elements:
- While the 3G network is still available, an iPhone 5s or more recent model.
- When only the LTE network is available, an iPhone 7 or more recent.
- The most recent iOS software has been downloaded.
- The carrier settings update to Fizz 50.0 or higher that was proposed was accepted (more information is available on the Apple website)
-
Does it support the right frequencies?
An LTE compatible phone configured with LTE network preferences must support:
- The HSPA 850 MHz frequency for calls.
- The dual frequency 1700/2100 MHz (also called AWS or band IV) for mobile data.
A phone that only allows 3G configuration or HSPA network preference must support:
- The dual frequency 1700/2100 MHz (also called AWS)
When you buy a new phone, the supported frequencies are usually listed in the technical specifications. If not, do a search on the Internet. There are sites that will confirm the frequencies supported by your phone once you enter its IMEI in their search engine.

Is it VoLTE certified with Fizz?
With Fizz, you get to enjoy our vast and ultrafast LTE network when using data with your mobile plan. A phone certified VoLTE with Fizz activated with a VoLTE compatible SIM card uses the VoLTE technology when it continues to display “LTE” in the right corner of the screen during a call. This means its calls are using the LTE network.
The official list of phones certified VoLTE with Fizz
The only official list of phones that are certified VoLTE with Fizz is at the bottom of this page
Good to know: this list if or the Canadian versions (i.e. designated and sold in Canada) of VoLTE-certified phones. If you have, say, a European version of a model on this list, it won't be recognized by our systems as VoLTE-certified, but it may still work with the Fizz network. The only way to find out is to try it.
If your phone is not on our official list:
Don't panic! If your phone is not on the list of VoLTE certified phones at the bottom of this page, don't panic! For now, you can continue to use your mobile plan, but you will eventually have to change your phone.Your phone IS on our official list:
Perfect, now onto the software update and the VoLTE function.

- Activate the VoLTE function: In general, you must go under:
